Using Airmar Transducers with APEX

Splitting Airmar Transducer Beams on Humminbird APEX: Configuration Guide

For anglers and marine professionals using an Airmar transducer with a Humminbird APEX unit, it's possible to split the transducer’s high and low frequency beams across two ports for optimized sonar performance. This setup allows you to take full advantage of both Airmar and Humminbird technologies, including high-resolution 2D sonar, Down Imaging (DI), and Side Imaging (SI).

Required Equipment and Cable Setup

To achieve this configuration, you'll need the following components:

  • 14 M ID SIDB Y Cable
  • Adapter Box or Y cable:
    • ADAPT-14HB2 (Humminbird CHIRP Adapter Box) to be used with transducers that DO NOT have the Mix and Match Connector.
    • MMC-14HB2 Y cable to be used with Mix and Match transducers.
  • Humminbird XM 14 HW MSI T (or thru-hull equivalent) Transducer
    • Airmar LH, LHW, LM, or MWHW transducer with Mix and Match connector.

Cable Setup:

  1. High Frequency Beam (Port 1 - Yellow):
    • Connect the yellow (HIGH) side of the ADAPT-14HB2 to the 2D side of the 14 M ID SIDBY.
    • Connect the XM 14 HW MSI T to the SI/DI side of the 14 M ID SIDB Y.
    • The 14 M ID SIDB Y connects to the yellow sonar port on the APEX.
  2. Low Frequency Beam (Port 2 - Gray):
    • Connect the gray (LOW) side of the ADAPT-14HB2 directly to the gray port on the APEX unit.

Transducer Setup in APEX

Once connected, the APEX should automatically identify the transducers and frequencies in use. However, if manual configuration is needed, note the following:

Port 1 (Yellow Port) Settings:

  1. Enable: 2D, DI, and SI
  2. Select Frequency Capability for each:
    1. 2D Frequency - Select from the following to match your transducer's capability:
      • Airmar High Frequency
      • Airmar Medium Frequency
    2. DI Frequency: 455/800/MEGA+
    3. SI Frequency: 455/800/MEGA+

Port 2 (Gray Port) Settings:

  • Enable: 2D
  • 2D Frequency - Select from the following to match your transducer's capability:
    • Airmar Low Frequency
    • Airmar Medium Frequency

Final Checks

Before heading out on the water, confirm the following:

  • Frequencies selected in the APEX match the Airmar transducer specs.
  • All connections are secure and ports are correctly assigned.
