Testing should be performed with the boat in the water; however, you can confirm basic operation while the boat is trailered.
Press POWER once to turn the unit on. If key sounds are enabled, an audible chirp will confirm each button press. If key sounds are turned off, the keys will still function normally but will not produce an audible tone.
If the unit does not power up, ensure it is fully seated on the mount and that power is available. Check that all connectors are firmly plugged in. Some connectors screw in, while others use a push‑and‑lock design—verify that each cable type is properly secured.
Start-Up Screens and Options
HELIX and Legacy Models:
The first screen will prompt you to press MENU for start-up options. After pressing MENU, the available options will appear:
- Normal
- Simulation
- System Status
APEX, XPLORE, SOLIX, and ONIX
These models do not display the same “Press Menu” start-up prompt. Their start-up flow varies by model and software version.
Transducer Detection (In Water vs. Out of Water)
A message on the start-up screen indicates the transducer connection status.
- When the unit is on the trailer, the transducer may not be detected.
- This is normal.
- The transducer must be submerged in water for reliable detection and for sonar to activate.
- Even on the trailer, the unit may still display water temperature if the connected transducer includes a temperature sensor.
- However, temperature alone does not confirm full sonar detection or operation.
If no transducer is detected, the unit will automatically enter Simulation Mode after the start-up screen times out. You may manually select Simulation Mode from the start-up options if desired.
When a transducer is correctly detected, the unit will enter Normal operation unless the user chooses a different start-up option.
Testing in Water
When the boat is in the water and the transducer is fully submerged:
- Live sonar data will appear.
- If the bottom is visible on-screen and a digital depth readout is present, the fish finder is operating correctly.
- Ensure the water depth is greater than 2 ft, but within the unit’s depth capability.
- Remember: sonar cannot pass through air.
Once basic operation is confirmed, gradually increase boat speed to test high‑speed performance. If the unit operates correctly at low speed but loses bottom at higher speeds, the transducer may need adjustment.
Refer to the appropriate Transducer Installation section for detailed adjustment procedures. Note that achieving optimal performance may require multiple small adjustments.
Important: For transom‑mount transducers, install the third mounting screw only after completing all final adjustments.
